FRISCO, TX – Homecoming at Centennial High School is a meaningful event for many students. In addition to having fun with friends and dancing the night away, getting nominated for the Homecoming Court is another significant highlight for all who get nominated, especially seniors. A tradition that started last year was sashing the Senior Homecoming Court, in which sweethearts, cheerleaders, student council members, and Titan TV members show up at senior nominees’ houses at 5 a.m. to surprise them with their nominations and sash them.
Some of the nominees were too shocked to say anything while others had reactions that consisted of few words.
Audrey Ding was one of the Sweethearts who helped surprise the senior nominees. She was very shocked at finding out she was a nominee. She couldn’t stop smiling with a hand placed over her mouth when the cheerleaders turned and shook cowbells at her while putting on her sash and crown.
After the group entered his bedroom, Jackson Graham held his face in his hands for a few moments, surprised by the bright lights. Madison Finney, a member of Titan TV, asked how he felt being in the senior homecoming court. Lifting his head, Graham answered with a smile. “Nice,” he said.
Since the nominees were woken up very early, they took some time to react. Some of them were more sleepy than others.
Brock Benner, one of the senior nominees, was quite sleepy when he was woken up, but he still managed to express his excitement. Finney told him he was on the senior homecoming court and asked how he felt. “[I’m] so excited,” he said.
Javier Escudero Del Valle was more awake but also expressed similar feelings. “I feel shocked. I feel a little excited honestly,” he said.
This tradition is such a meaningful way to honor these students and it’s heartwarming to see the excitement and surprise on the faces of the senior nominees as they were sashed for the Homecoming Court. It’s clear that being nominated for the Homecoming Court and having the opportunity to wear the nomination sash is a special moment for many of these seniors in their last year of high school. The tradition adds to the anticipation and excitement as the nominees wait to hear who will be crowned at the Homecoming football game. Hopefully, it will continue after the creators of the tradition graduate this school year so the excitement can be felt for years to come.
