FRISCO, TEXAS — Every year, 4.5 million Americans require a blood transfusion. Every day, 43,000 pints of blood are used in America and Canada to save lives. Every two seconds, someone needs blood to survive. Maintaining a steady blood supply is essential to ensure patients can receive life-saving treatment. On Nov. 14th, Centennial’s HOSA will collaborate with Carter Blood Drive to give students the opportunity to donate a pint of blood during the school day. This blood will be separated based on its components: red blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
Organizations like America’s Blood Centers and the American Red Cross collect donations all around America to meet the standards needed. Students who donate have the chance to get a red cord as seniors. To qualify, students must donate twice during their senior year, designate a faculty member to donate in their place twice, or volunteer as an active HOSA member at two blood drives.
Students don’t only receive a cord for participating in this event, they also experience the honor of saving a life. Senior Neha Kalidas shared: “I feel privileged that I can donate blood. I’m healthy enough to give back to others and save lives at the same time, something a lot of people can’t do. So I am more than happy that I can help with the supply meeting the demand.”
Donating blood requires some preparation to ensure collection goes well. It’s important to eat a substantial, healthy breakfast with protein and carbs to help donors stay awake and alert after getting their blood taken. With each drop, those blood donors join a network of compassionate individuals who, together, can keep hope alive for those in desperate need. So, whether you’re donating blood, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, remember that your efforts save lives!
