FRISCO, TEXAS — Each new year, the music industry looks forward to the Recording Academy’s Grammy Awards. More commonly referred to as the Grammys, the ceremony recognizes and acknowledges musicians and artists for their hard work and achievements from the previous year. Actors, directors, and movies have been acknowledged and awarded through the Oscars since 1929, but the music industry held its first award ceremony, the Grammys, in 1959. The most popular categories are Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.
This year, the Grammy committee reviewed and looked through some incredible songs, albums, and writing, and eventually came to a decision of who the winners would be. However, the results of these awards have left fans either in shock, confusion, or satisfaction.
First-time Grammy winner Sabrina Carpenter left the award show with two Grammys. Carpenter won Best Pop Solo Performance with her song “ Espresso,” as well as Best Pop Vocal Album with her sixth recording album “Short n’ Sweet.” She also charmed the audience with her theatrical performance. After being in the industry for several years, and getting no recognition for her work, Carpenter finally scored her win this year with her new album and singles that have been pop hits globally.
“Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar was shockingly a huge hit within the Grammy committee. Lamar stole the show with his multiple wins this year, winning Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video, which most music fans did not expect. Nonetheless, the 2025 Grammys were a huge success for Lamar and his future in the music industry.
Some artists choose to shift genres in the years they’ve been in the music industry. Beyoncé was first introduced in the year 1999 as a pop artist and has been in the pop genre for the majority of her career. However, she surprised fans when she took a dramatic turn and recorded her eighth studio album, as a country album, titled “Cowboy Carter.” Album of the Year, and Country Album of the Year were both won by “Cowboy Carter,” showing a promising future for Beyoncé in the country genre.
However, many Grammy fans were disappointed that Taylor Swift didn’t win any Grammys this year. Swift was nominated for six Grammys: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo, Best Pop Vocal Album of the Year, and Best Music Video of the Year, and didn’t win any of these categories. “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift’s 11th studio album, was an emotional, in-depth album that attracted her true fans, but seemingly not the Grammy committee.
The Grammys are a night most musicians wait eagerly and plan for months in advance, and although this year’s Grammys were bittersweet for many, the fans can’t wait for new music by all of these artists, and are looking forward to another successful year.
