FRISCO, TEXAS — Started at The University of Oklahoma, Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, dedicated to promoting interest in math in students, now has at least 100,000 members across more than 2,420 high schools in the U.S., including Centennial High School.
The content of the meetings varies by school. At Centennial High School, “Mu Alpha Theta meetings are student-led. The club’s officers create slides…that include reminders, upcoming events, and math skills,” said Brianna Del Pozzo, sponsor of the Centennial chapter of Mu Alpha Theta. “The math portion of the meetings relates to whichever competition is coming up or contains interesting content that may be taught…beyond high school. Typically, my role is to set up the technological components for the officers and to help provide/pass out any necessary materials,”
The competitions, held at local, state, and national levels, are an excellent way for students to push themselves further and see how they measure up against others in the field, applying what they’ve learned in a fun and challenging environment.
Additionally, up to two active members of each chapter may be nominated for $4,000 and three $5,000 scholarships. There are also awards (separate from the competitions) ranging from $1,000-$7,500, and there are grants to support research and/or pay for related fees.
By joining Mu Alpha Theta, students gain access to incredible opportunities to challenge themselves academically, build leadership skills, and contribute to the community. Mu Alpha Theta provides an excellent way to celebrate your interest in math and take it to the next level.
