FRISCO, TX — On March 26, 734 Frisco Independent School District (FISD) student art entries were entered at the annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) Regional Art Competition. Out of 734 registered entries, an impressive 696 received the highest VASE rating of four.
The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) sponsors VASE, an event recognizing exemplary artwork made by high school students. Centennial High School (CHS) art teachers, Mrs. Moore, Ms. Ham, and Ms. Jayme, facilitate CHS students entering the competition.
“The work produced by these students is unbelievable and a testament to their hard work,” said FISD Fine Arts Coordinator Rob Draper. “The district’s commitment to art education, from kindergarten through 12th grade, is on full display as these works present a cumulative effort by all of the art teachers here in Frisco ISD to grow artists.”
All student entries receive a certificate; student artworks rated a four will receive a regional medal and advance to Area Qualifiers, and the top 10% of artworks in each area will be selected to advance to the State VASE Event. The VASE competition is rated on a one-to-four scale, with one being below average, two average, three excellent, and four superior. CHS had 100 entries, with nine moving on to state.
Mrs. Moore was confident about CHS students’ performance. “I was not surprised at the results,” Moore said. Mrs. Moore also told us that the most popular artworks to be submitted in the VASE competition are “[h]yperrealistic portraits that are done in pastel and gridded.”
Mrs. Moore offers words of wisdom to future student participants within VASE. “[H]ave confidence in yourself, and all the hard work and dedication will shine through to the judges,” stated Mrs. Moore.
Any student can participate in the VASE competition. There is a nominal entry fee to cover the costs associated with VASE, such as judging, medals, and other expenses. If you are interested in competing in VASE, please contact Mrs. Moore, Ms. Ham, or Ms. Jayme for more information.
