Artificial Intelligence: Helping or Hindering?

Artificial intelligence. We all know what that does and means. It helps us when we are stuck, while also wanting help, while other times it does the thinking for us. But how does artificial intelligence enhance, while also challenging, mean for advanced classes like animation, architecture, and civil engineering at the CTE Center?

At the CTE Center there are advanced classes that involve a lot of skill and hard work and leadership. It takes a lot of their time to come up with ideas that help people and make the workplace better. But where does that help them draw the line between using AI for everything vs helping us? There’s no doubt that these students learn from their prior mistakes but with this it’s shown when students are using their hard work and it pays off but what does that mean when AI comes into the picture?

AI is meant to be used in a way that can guide us whenever there is a problem that needs to be fixed, or whether or not you’re unsure of a problem that you can’t figure out. But this doesn’t mean it will take over for you. Over at the Graphic Design class they shared some of their challenges and helpfulness of the use of AI.

“I think Artificial Intelligence is enhancing because it can help us save time and it definitely eliminates a lot of the brain storming and the thinking that you would have to do, like pre planning wise, but I think it can also be challenging because you would have to use it in the right ways, the ethical way, and it can take away from the creativity that goes into the actual art.” Gabriel from Weakland High school shared.

In Graphic Design you need to be creative, in order to make your ideas come alive. But what does that mean engineering wise?

Over at the Civil Engineering class there are multiple easy to use AI. it helps  “So all of our engineer classes have an engineer design process and at the beginning of that process includes brain storming so coming up with ideas and I encourage the kids to look at what they think so first write down what they think would be a good solution or design how does nature solve it so looking at biomimicry and then ask AI how it would solve it. So then you have a whole different perspective and possibilities and then start going from there” The teacher of the Civil Engineering class has said.

In this moment now our media and our creativity is more exposed to AI to try to help us complete what we started with. But we can’t get rid of it as AI is growing more advanced. But it’s also important to realize that you need to include creativity, as well as drawing the line of creative vs, plagiarizing, AI can’t do everything for you. It’s important to use your own brain and think. Over at the Architecture class we hear from a couple of students how the challenges of AI in architecture.

“It has its disadvantages, those challenges can be, when you’re not understanding the scale of your building, it can give you incorrect information and skew your building.” Ashton from the Architecture class has shared.

Overall AI is widely used, it helps us grow and learn what we need help with, but there are downsides that come along with that. AI can make mistakes that a Human brian needs to figure out on their own.

It’s fair to say that Artificial Intelligence is useful for whenever you feel stuck but that doesn’t mean it can do everything for you.
